Ni Hao! Year 7s are learning Mandarin

This year our Year 7s are learning something a little bit different...Mandarin!

Today was their first lesson, where they started to learn about the 2,000 characters that make up the Chinese language.

Over the term they will learn how the characters are formed, how to pronounce them and even how to write them. China is famed for its amazing calligraphy skills, so the students will have a lot of practicing on their hands.

Mandarin is the official language of China, with over 70 percent of the population speaking it. It is also a tonal language, meaning the same word said in two different ways can mean totally different things.
