Be the change! Safer Internet Day 2017
Tuesday 7th February was Safer Internet Day 2017. This year the motto was "Be The Change: unite for a better internet". The day is celebrated globally to promote safe and positive uses of the internet.
The day gave us a chance to chance to highlight the positive uses of technology and to explore the role we play in helping to create a better and safer online community. It calls upon young people, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and wider, to join together in helping to create a better internet.
The ICT department ran sessions all day in lessons about the importance of online safety. They used presentations, activities and homework to get the students really thinking about how safe they are being on the internet.
They also ran a selfie competition alongside the #giveasmile campaign. This campaign is designed to highlight the power of image in digital youth culture, with 4 in 5 young people saying that in the last year they have felt inspired by an image or video to do something positive.
But almost 2 in 5 have recieved negative comments on a photo they have posted, with just as many saying they sometimes don't post images for worries about mean comments. The #giveasmile campaign hopes to help turn these negative attitudes on their head, encouraging young people to be nice just because!
As part of the day students were shown a short film called Like Me. The film explores how social media can sometimes feel like being on stage in front of the whole world.
Oversharing on social media and being unaware of the reach it has can really affect our lives in the real world. It's vital to encourage critical thinking skills whilst using the internet, making sure students are thinking clearly and asking the right questions before engaging online.
"You can have still have fun whilst using e-safety with other people such as sending appropriate things to each other such as nice emails, comments and pictures"- Tanesha
The response to they day was brilliant and the students were really engaged. And the winner of the selfie competition will be revealed soon.
