What is an Academy?

Academies are schools funded directly by the Government and not by the local authority. This means that they can have more independence in the way that they provide education. They aim to raise standards and provide new opportunities.

The Co-operative Academy of Leeds works in partnership with Leeds City Council and with other school in the area. It operates the same arrangements as other Leeds schools with regard to admissions, special educational needs, attendance and exclusions.

Academies still follow the national curriculum in English, Maths, Science and ICT (Information and Communication Technology).

Many academies have sponsors, who have input into the ethos of the school, and bring their expertise to the management of the school.
